SYNOPSIS

Based on true events. BUSTER KEATON gives an interview with the press. He tells of his fight over money with KATHLEEN “KITTIE” KEY, an actress on the rise and his mistress. He claims she assaulted him in his MGM dressing room because he wouldn't give in to her demands for money. Contrasted with Buster’s story is the true version of the events. In this version Buster brutally beats Kittie. He is enraged that she threatens to go to the press. She does so because he broke the  deal with her to keep his sexual practice of receiving anal sex a secret (considered a sexual deviance in the 1930's). A cover-up story is concocted by LOUIS B. MAYER. Mayer fires her. Kittie’s career is ruined. She becomes a casualty of the patriarchal film industry where women are sexual fodder sacrificed in the interest of profit.

EXCERPTS FROM SCRIPT

KITTIE and BUSTER meet in his MGM dressing room.

BUSTER
You better flag your ass out of here, quick!

KITTIE

I'll go alright. To the press.

She is grabbed by the back of the head by BUSTER. He slams her face against a curtain covered window. The glass shatters and she stumbles to the floor.

BUSTER

God damn Irish whore!

She struggles to pull herself up using the curtains. They give way and she tumbles back down to the floor. He yanks her up and flings her across the room. In the process a trailing hand's fingernails grazes his face leaving a few scratches. She collides with another curtain covered window, her elbow shattering the glass. He moves towards her. As he reaches her, she begins the motion to slap him with her right hand. He reaches up with his left hand and catches it.  He pauses just an instant to look at her with crazed-hatred eyes. He then punches her hard with a closed fist in the mouth with his right hand, letting go of her with his left.  She whirls into a room service-type cart, but keeps her feet.  The contents topple over but the cart remains upright.  She steadies herself on the cart. Her back is to him.  Blood drops from her mouth onto the white linen covering.  Next to the blood drops is a steak knife.  He comes up behind her and grabs her by the right shoulder with his left hand and rears back to throw another punch with his right hand.  She grabs the knife.  He spins her around only to come face-to-face with the knife.

KITTIE and the KID eat pie at John's Cafe.

KITTIE
Now tell me you're not glad you came.

BLACKJACK KID
Good pie. Cherry.

KITTIE

That's Charlie's favorite. He's fond of cherries.

BLACKJACK KID

Charlie who?

KITTIE

Chaplin.

BLACKJACK KID

Oh. That guy.

KITTIE

What pumpkin patch you roll out of?

BLACKJACK KID

Arizona.

KITTIE

I was in The Kid.

BLACKJACK KID

Think they have blueberry too?

KITTIE

What did you do in Arizona? Besides winning pie eating contests.

BLACKJACK KID

I got a ranch. It's a nice place. A real nice place. Trees. Grass. Water. A cabin half-built. A man could live there.

He looks up from his pie at KITTIE.

BLACKJACK KID

And a woman.

KITTIE

I'm going to be a star someday. It's my life. It's the only thing in the whole world I want.

KITTIE  helps PEP move in to the PAR-VA-SED.

KITTIE

Maybe you'll write a movie and I'll star.

PEP

Better happen soon.

KITTIE

Why so?

PEP

That just pays the rent.  Books are my racket.

KITTIE

About what?

PEP

Perversion and flops.

KITTIE

So its about this town.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On location in the California desert filming re-shoots of Ben Hur. KITTIE tosses and turns in her camp cot unable to sleep. She leaves her tent and lights a cigarette. From co-star RAMON NOVARRO's tent exits RAMON and HECTOR. As they exit they are in post-coital bliss.  They notice KITTIE and their composure instantly changes to business-like.

HECTOR
Gracias Don Novarro.

RAMON

De nada Hector.

The two men awkwardly shake hands.  HECTOR exits.  RAMON walks over to KITTIE.

RAMON

Running lines.

KITTIE

You don't have to do that. I've diddled a bean or two.

RAMON

Es verdad?

KITTIE

I prefer a poke, but ... you get it.

RAMON
(sighs)
We are who they make us be.

KITTIE
Lies.

KITTIE, JOHN FORD, and TOM MIX have lunch on set.

FORD pulls a box of donuts out of the basket.  TOM grabs them excitedly.

TOM MIX
Sure am fond of them donuts!

He takes one and bites into it.  FORD pulls three blue metal camp cups from the basket and sets them on the table.  He opens the bottle and pours a shot of whiskey into each cup.

JOHN FORD
Seem's I've been doing it all wrong.

MIX stops eating his donut in mid-motion and looks at FORD, incredulous.

JOHN FORD
Max ...

KITTIE
The Indian.

TOM MIX
What?

JOHN FORD
The Indian.

TOM MIX
Huh?

JOHN FORD
His feathers.

TOM MIX
Feathers?

KITTIE
Feathers.

TOM MIX
Feathers are feathers.

KITTIE
(exasperated)
Comanch' don't wear head rigs.

JOHN FORD
(to Kittie)
Baby Sister, meet your new co-star, Tom Mix.

KITTIE

Oh Mr. Ford!

JOHN FORD

Call me Coach.

BUSTER meets with LOUIS B. MAYER in his MGM  office.

MAYER

(pointing at a globe)
Germany. Hungry. Russia. Poland. Poverty, pogroms, pestilence.

BUSTER leans in to the globe to look.

MAYER
Laemmle, Zukor, Warner, me. A clothier, furrier, nickelodeon and theater schleps.

BUSTER leans up, surprised.

MAYER
We didn't look to America and see the Barrymores. We saw Morgan, Rockerfeller, Stanford.

He goes back to his desk and stands behind it.

MAYER
Steel. Oil. Railroads! Art is shit. it's about DO-MIN-ION.

He points to the door.

MAYER
Now get the fuck out!

BUSTER walks away dejectedly.

MAYER
And make some money while you still can.
